Actionable Cold Email Tip
Most people think cold outbound is like turning on a faucet. They think once a campaign is turned on the leads start flowing like water and you’re closing deals the next day.
This week I launched a campaign for a new client. We have a very clear picture of their ideal customer profile and offer.
Here’s how the first week went.
We didn’t receive any positive replies for the first 3 days of the campaign. Only negative responses.
Then on day 4, the tide shifted. We ended up booking in a qualified call and got 4 more interested replies.
Now they have to attend the meeting, run their sales process and close the deal which should take at least another two weeks to a month.
It’s typical to start seeing interested replies and meetings booked in the first week.
I don’t typically expect campaigns to fully ramp for 90 days though.
This is how a sales cycle works. There is a lagging effect until you’re actually making money.
There are a few reasons why and I’m going to explain them in a second.
The first is simply the fact that you’re doing cold outreach. In other words, they don’t know you or like you or haven’t asked to be contacted. This means people need to warm to you.
So they’ll do their research, look you up and make sure you’re legit. If you have a good online presence and are selling something people actually want, then you’re already on the right track.
Here are a few data points we’ve observed after sending more than 2 million cold emails.
People reply on average 72 hours after they receive an email
55% of interested replies are generated from email 2
As a benchmark, an average campaign will get 1 booking per every 1,000 leads contacted
So basically, what this tells us is you need to have a blend of volume, timing and a relevant message.
It takes time to warm up a prospect. It takes time for your emails to go out. It takes time to schedule a call.
Exercise patience and don’t give up too early. I’ve seen so many campaigns work after the 6th iteration.
Then take your learnings and apply them to the next round so each campaign gets better and better over time.
It’s simple, not easy. Keep pushing and learning and soon you’ll have a winning campaign.
To help you shortcut this process, I made you a training showing how I make sure campaigns are setup for success.

Quick bite-sized pointer: 99% of people think building rapport in sales is about being friendly or nice. It's actually about reducing time to trust. How? Prove you're legit w case studies & insights that indicate thought leadership. Rapport is a byproduct of a well oiled sales process + social proof.
