Actionable Cold Email Tip

I recently unlocked a new way to convert interested leads into booked sales appointments.

A client came to me to help them build out their SDR function. They are doing outbound via email and DMs. The thing is, they have bandwidth and want to maximize their output so we’re working on outbound dialing.

In this case we’re doing warm calling and cold calling. After building out the process, we’re seeing 2x increase in conversions running calling protocol. This means if we’re booking 20% of our calls from interested replies, we’re able to increase bookings to 40% of interested replies by calling.

Cold calling is calling into businesses who have never heard of you or asked to be contacted.

The average cold call lasts about 3 seconds - from the time the prospect answers to the time they hang up on you….

Cold calling can be brutal. But it can also be an incredibly efficient way to collect more leads, especially when they’ve just replied to your email.

This is the main difference between cold and warm calling.

Warm calling is simply calling prospects who have already replied to your message. They’ve indicated interest or have more questions.

The key to any warm or cold call is the first 15 seconds. What’s even more important is the first 4 seconds. If you get hung up on second 4, the next 11 seconds won’t matter.

To nail this section, practice a permission based intro - “hey, this is x from y company. I know I’m catching you out of the blue but if you have 25 seconds I can let you know why I’m calling. Then you can decide if it’s worth it to keep talking.” Focus on tone and pacing. Nailing your intro will vastly improve your conversions.

Then the prospect will either say “ok” or “piss off”. If ok, then you get into your discovery. Remember your goal of the call is the same goal of a cold email - book the meeting.

Once you have a meeting scheduled, run your sales process to dig into pain points and sell the deal (if they’re a fit).

Now you might be wondering, where do I find numbers to call prospects.

First, check the prospect’s email signature. You will often find their contact details there. If it’s unavailable, use a data source like LeadMagic, Datagama or Findymail to find the prospect’s phone.

Then dial away.

So today’s tip is very simple: if you want more leads and your cold emails are getting interested replies, then enrich their phone number and add them to a dialing sequence.
