Actionable Cold Email Tip
This past week I was DMing with a client who wanted feedback on one of their new lead magnets.
They wanted to make sure it was actionable and provided enough value. I reviewed it and gave them some feedback. This exercise got the juices flowing and made me think.
If they’re facing challenges building their own lead magnets then you might be facing a similar challenge. So I want to share a few learnings around lead magnets, why they work so well and how to structure them to maximize your lead conversions.
If you aren’t using lead magnets in your outreach, then you should be. I’m seeing conversions 3x higher in competitive niches like ecommerce, B2B SaaS and marketing when using lead magnets vs not using them.
The point of a lead magnet is two fold.
1 - they help you increase the number of leads who reply to your messaging. If you’re leading with a valuable asset, the prospect is more likely to raise their hand with interest. This means more people reply to you compared to simply pushing for a meeting off the bat.
2 - they help you warm your prospects. Remember when you’re doing outreach, prospects haven’t asked to be contacted, they don’t know you or like you. This is a big hurdle to overcome so what you do instead is lead with an asset providing value that actually helps them. This leads them to trust you more, which means more people will show up, the calls will be warmer and you’ll be more likely to close them.
Just this past week a new client added $15k in revenue from a lead we brought them. The leads first step toward the client was through a lead magnet.
Here’s are 3 actionable steps to create a high converting lead magnet:
Make sure it’s actually good. To confirm, ask yourself would I pay $50 for this lead magnet? Better yet, ask a friend if they would pay $50 for it. If yes, you’re on the right track.
Give them a step by step plan. They should leave the lead magnet with a clear idea what to do next to extract the value you’ve given them. If they can apply your learnings and actually get value from it, they’ll be more likely to believe you can solve bigger problems for their business.
Make it easy to consume. Consider your target audience and how they’re consuming your content. They’re likely a busy business owner - so they might have a few minutes to skim a doc. If you catch them at the right time, they might have a full 30 minute block to watch your video. Make it consumable in written and video form if possible. This maximizes the chances your prospect will actually engage with and take action from your lead magnet.
