Actionable Cold Email Tip
I used to think getting results with cold email was as easy as set it and forget it.
When I first started, I thought all you needed was a campaign slapped together with a list of a few thousand prospects, a few emails from some guru’s template and a sending tool.
This used to work decently well… until the market started catching up. Like any other market, cold email is quickly becoming more sophisticated.
Improved spam detection, increased spam complaints from major ESP providers’ customers due to increased email volume and general noise in the inbox are some of the biggest drivers of this.
Many have called 2024 the year of the deliverability crisis.
This has caused people to call for the death of cold email….. and since we’re still booking meetings every day for our clients, I’ll call BS.
Being said, many of my competitors have been completely wiped out due to these headwinds.
Now, the chaos is settling and becoming the new normal.
What was once a major market arbitrage is now less so. Think Facebook ads 10-15 years ago. Has it gotten harder and more expensive? Yes. Has it stopped working? No. You just need to get better.
So, to help you stay on the edge of what’s working with cold email in November 2024, I want to share a few insights I’ve noticed in my time operating high converting cold email campaigns.
For context, in October 2024, I ran numerous campaigns that cleared 1:300 lead to meeting ratio (1 booking for every 300 leads contacted).
The biggest takeaway - never stop doing the fundamentals. No hack, tactic or tip is going to help if you don’t take your deliverability seriously and aren’t running sound campaigns and verifying your lists. If you’re doing that, then you’re already 50% of the way there.
To bridge the rest of the way, here are 3 quick hitting tips.
Diversify your inboxes
Right now we’re on a 50/50 mix of google and microsoft providers. We’re also testing out SMTP servers. Keep sending volume low. Warm up on. Same as it’s always been, we’re now sending less volume (10-15 per inbox per day) across 2 inboxes per domain.
Build out your intro offer to sell to cold traffic
Give your client a specific short term offer solving an acute pain point guaranteeing a specific outcome. Cold traffic doesn’t want a long term recurring service. They want something that works. Prove you can get a result with a short term intro offer.
Then let your client delivery (plus your salesmanship) upsell them into a long term recurring deal.
A few example of this are: system audits, setups and one-time outcome oriented service delivery
Use Clay to score up your total addressable market
Using Clay enables massive leverage in your workflow, if you know how to use it properly. I’ve been using it to score my client’s lead lists. I now have a list of all potential good fit businesses scored based on fit I can use to consistently re-target their audiences with new offers.
Many people think because their prospect didn’t reply after 3 emails, they’re not a good fit or will never close.
Think again. 98% of buyers aren’t going to buy right now, so keep creating new offers and using your high intent targeting as a reason to reach out.
If you want to upskill your cold email game, I just dropped a new training on the 3 skills you need to master to actually get results.

Quote of the week: You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over. — Richard Branson
Quick bite-sized pointer: I used to have a problem with customer churn. My ego told me I had all the answers, but the reality was I wasn't listening to my customers. So I started running customer interviews to truly understand their problems. I asked: -why did you buy? -what problem were you looking to solve? -what is the most valuable thing about working with us? -what would you need to see if we 10x'd the price? I collected their responses and used them to create an offer and hone my service delivery. Now my business is healthier and my clients are much happier. Moral of the story: never stop listening to your customer.
