Actionable Cold Email Tip

Deliverability is the biggest bottleneck to successful outbound in October 2024.

Email volume has gone up, Google and Microsoft users are reporting more spam and as a result their user experience is negatively impacted.

Accounts with low reply rates are getting flagged more quickly by the big email providers to maintain a good user experience.

So how do you stay relevant in the inbox and actually get people to reply?

I'll share what I’m doing right now to generate 1 meeting for every 500-1000 prospects contacted in October 2024.

The standard deliverability best practices apply, use multiple sending domains, setup your DNS records, and send low volume.

Beyond these basic standards, I recommend focusing on your data cleanliness, list segmentation and diversifying outreach channels.

1) Clean your data

You NEED to clean your list or it will negatively impact your deliverability.

Up to 40% of data from data providers are going to bounce.

Scrub your data to save your domains and inbox placement. This is absolute bare minimum. If you aren’t doing this, your campaigns will struggle to work.

Clean data also means only hitting up relevant prospects. No more blanket spray and pray messages to the entire marketing department.

You now need to make sure your list only includes good fit titles who will resonate with your offer.

This means building and scoring hyper targeted lists inside Clay.

2) Segment your list

Your prospect has a different priority set based on their role within the company’s leadership stack.

Think about it like this: a company VP Sales focuses on strategy and wants to optimize the total output of the sales team.

Going down the stack, the sales manager focuses on supporting their reps and wants to optimize for daily KPIs like outbound calls, dms and emails.

Both goals are related, but the VP will resonate more with messaging relating to business strategy, while the sales manager will resonate more with improving rep efficiency and conversions.

This is the core of segmentation. Understand the priority of your prospect and then create messaging speaking to a relevant use case.

Once you’ve scored your list for fit, use Clay to segment your list based on relevant personas and write messaging specific to that segment.

3) Diversify channels

If you’re reading this newsletter, you’re probably in B2B which means your target audience is likely on LinkedIn.

We’ve been seeing great results so far with our work on the platform.

Right now, I’m seeing connection acceptance rates of 20-60%, DM reply rates of 15-20% and booking rates at 20% of total interested replies.

Still dialing in these numbers, but this should give you a sense of what is possible when you use LinkedIn for outreach.

Hopefully, these 3 steps help you navigate the current outbound landscape.

If you’re curious about implementing any of this, feel free to drop me a reply to this email and I’ll give you some personalized guidance.

Cheers

  • Quick bite-sized pointer: Cold outbound is all about creating trust (as fast as possible). This is why you see your fav guru building a YouTube channel. Video creates a parasocial relationship which builds trust between the audience and the creator. Exploit this by building your brand online with video.
